An interest in material-oriented chemistry and an enjoyment of experimental work. Technical skill, knowledge of computers and foreign languages are advantageous.
The bachelor's course in Technical Chemistry teaches:
- basic chemical principles,
- practical skills for working in chemical laboratories,
- an understanding of how chemical processes are used in large scale technical industrial applications and the general conditions that apply to such use, and
- general scientific technical knowledge and skills that can be used throughout the field of chemistry.
Graduates are equally familiar with practical laboratory work as with theoretical principles and basic concepts of chemistry: they have an excellent command of technical terminology and are familiar with important methods specific to the field. They understand the fundamental properties of materials and their conversion. They are capable of developing and using methods for synthesising and characterising materials and also know how to control the speed of reactions and influence chemical balances. Our bachelor's course counts as a Eurobachelor (http://www.eurobachelor.net).
The space available has in recent years been continually adapted to meet the requirements of modern, practical training and will continue to be adapted in the future. The course is not oversubscribed and there are plenty of free places. There is a sufficient number of professors and teaching assistants available for teaching and support. Specialists from industry are also used to provide special training.

There are almost 4,000 chemistry graduates working in Austria. The number increases by 2–3% every year. Unemployment rates are very low. Around half of our graduates work in application-oriented roles, one quarter in the sciences (research and development) and one quarter in multidisciplinary roles, which require other relevant knowledge in addition to knowledge of chemistry. There are therefore good career prospects not only in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries, but also in the metal-processing and ceramics industries, the energy and environmental industry, as well as in the public sector.
Study abroad and work placements
The Faculty of Technical Chemistry is a member of the European Chemistry Exchange Network (ECEN) for student exchanges, which means that it is possible to spend fully recognised semesters studying abroad. It is also possible to undertake work placements or bachelor's studies abroad through networked institutes. The course is accredited as a "Chemistry Eurobachelor“, which makes it easier to pursue further study abroad. Twelve practical hours per week every semester provide practical training in fields in which the faculty is conducting modern innovative research. This practical work may also be done as a work placement in the chemical industry.
