Teacher training covers four fundamental areas

  • specialist training
  • instructional training
  • pedagogical training — vocational preparation
  • practical training for a teaching post in a school

The specialist and instructional training takes place at Vienna University of Technology. The pedagogical/vocational training and the practical training mainly take place at the University of Vienna, specifically at the Teacher Training and Professional Research Unit at the Department of Education and Human Development, 1090 Vienna, Maria-Theresien-Straße 3, 3rd floor/Top 18.

The pedagogical/vocational training for student teachers and the practical training are used to impart personal, social and specialist (in particular, pedagogical, instructional, psychological, sociological and theoretical) skills, which will enable the student teachers to independently meet the requirements of the teaching profession in general, of vocational schools for different age groups and of other secondary or tertiary institutions, from a scientific basis and whilst exercising social responsibility.

The pedagogical/vocational training for student teachers covers the subject areas of "Introduction to School Pedagogy" and "Theory and Practice of School Pedagogy“. The practical training takes 12 weeks and includes two stages, one pedagogical and one subject-related practical stage.

Study conditions

Teacher training courses at Vienna University of Technology have many advantages. Teaching mostly takes place in smaller groups than at other universities. It is always possible to ask your lecturers questions. This is just one of the reasons why the support provided at TU Vienna is more personal and less anonymous than, for example, in mass-participation courses at other universities. On many courses, lecture dates are only set after consultation with students at the start of the semester. This enables clashes to be avoided in most cases and the arrangement of the "timetable" is very flexible.

The teacher training course for Descriptive Geometry is only offered at TU Vienna (and TU Graz) and is organised such that the timetable is already coordinated with the Mathematics or IT and IT Management teacher training courses. The combination with IT and IT Management is also only offered in Vienna.

The space available at Vienna University of Technology has been adapted in recent years and will continue to be in years to come. There is a sufficient number of professors and teaching assistants available for teaching and support. Specialists from the industry are also used to provide special training.
