Q: What are the admission deadlines?
A: The official closing date for admissions is October 31 and there is a period of grace until the end of November. You should apply as soon as possible because all the processes take time. Classes start on the first Monday of October so if you arrive later (november) it is possible that there are no more free places for you. There is also the possibility to start in the summer semester, we do not recommend doing so. Please contact us for futher information.
Q: Is there some kind of admission test?
A: No, Master Building Science and Technology is a regular master course at Vienna University of Technology, therefore you only have to meet the stated requirements.
Q: Do I need to submit a portfolio or CV?
A: No, you do not have to submit a full portfolio, however we ask you to include a short statement of purpose.
Q: What is a "special university entrance qualification"?
A: The "special university entrance qualification" requires international (non-EU) students to prove that they would be allowed to enter an equivalent master program in their homecountry or in the country where they got their Bachelor's degree. This document can come from any university, but must be dated for the semester in which the student wants to start at Vienna University of Technology. Please contact us for further details.
Q: Why do I have to prove that I would be allowed to enroll for a Master programme in my home country?
A: Some countries require their students to take a seperate exam to be admitted to a Master programme, therefore you have to prove that you took this exam and/or are theoretically allowed to enter a Master programme. Usually, a stamped and signed letter from a university is sufficient proof.
Q: Where can I have my documents certified?
A: Please read trough the appropriate section in the application PDF document. Certification is very important and can take some time.
Q: Who is responsible for the application process?
A: The application process is handled by a separate department of Vienna University of Technology. Their address can be found on top of the application PDF file. When sending documents, please only use a shipping method that provides you with live online tracking (e.g. UPS) so that it's possible to see when the department received the application.
Q: I don’t speak German, is this going to be a problem?
A: No, Master Building Science and Technology does not require you to speak German. All core courses are held in English. The “Knowledge of the German language” part in the official Vienna University of Technology admission information does not apply to Master Building Science and Technology. Still, we recommend taking at least the "German for foreigners" course that is offered at Vienna University of Technology. A basic understanding of German gives you more flexibility in your choice of electives, as many of them are taught only in German. However, individual tutoring in English is sometimes available.
Q: How can I prove my knowledge of the English language?
A: There are internationally recognized diplomas like TOEFL or GRE which are sufficient for Master Building Science and Technology. The need for these exams as proof of proficiency of the English language will be determined on an individual basis. (see next question)
Q: English is my mother language; do I need a TOEFL/GRE diploma as well?
A: If you’re from a country where English is the official language you do not need a TOEFL/GRE diploma.
Q: Are there any scholarships available?
A: There is a possibility to become scholarships for this checkout this site. The austrian scholarships are very rare and mostly given to nationals, so we would advise you to try to get a EU scholarship when you are EU member or try to get a mobility scholarship from your homecountry.
Q: While I am interested in Master Building Science and Technology, I've never had any formal architecture courses, is this going to be a problem for my application?
A: No, students from architecture, civil engineering, mechanical engineering, computer science, and cognitive sciences are accepted for the program. We ask students coming from outside the construction sector to include in their statement of purpose how they want to apply their knowledge in Building Science and Technology. Students might be required to take some basic architecture courses as electives. They count as regular architecture electives, therefore you do not have any disadvantages.
Q: I am from a country where the Bachelor/Master system is not used in architecture - can I still enroll for Master Building Science and Technology?
A: Yes, if your amount of credits is equivalent to a Bachelor degree. However, you might have to gain your Bachelor at Vienna University of Technology. This is usually done by completing a design studio worth 12 ECTS.

Q: I am an architecture student at Vienna University of Technology, however I’m still in the Diplomstudium and not in the new Bachelor/Master system. I have now finished the first part of my studies (1. Studienabschnitt). Is this equivalent to a Bachelor degree? Is it possible for me to do a Master Building Science and Technology?
A: No, the first part of the Diplomstudium does not qualify you to particpate in a master course. However you may change into the new Master/Bachelor system and then study Master Building Science and Technology. When you change from the Diplomstudium to the Bachelor/Master system, you are awarded the title BSc, however it is possible that you have to take additional courses to get that title. The dean's office often deals with such cases, so changing to the Bachelor/Master system is not difficult at all.
