General information

Vienna University of Technology views itself as an integrative educational and research institution, in which specialists are encouraged to conduct interdisciplinary activities. This interaction of many disciplines has the objective of achieving the desired synergy.

The university's eight faculties cover the entire range of the classic engineering fields. The more than 2,000 members of scientific staff, according to their area of specialization are assigned to almost 70 institutes, covering both teaching and research in their capacities as civil and electrical engineering, computer scientists, mechanical engineers, mathematicians, physicists, chemists, architects, urabn planners, economic and social scientists, as well as jurisprudents.

Services offered include a broad spectrum of know-how, encompassing both high-tech problem solving and expert test evaluations.

Profound expertise and the large pool of specialists active at the TU in research, teaching and as partners in business and commerce, make interaction among disciplines a prerequisite for maintaining the TU's position as one of the best on the international scene.

Admission to regular studies

Admission to a degree programme requires:

  • General university qualification,
  • Special university qualification for the course of studies selected and
  • Knowledge of the German language.

Persons who have already been admitted to another Austrian university for the course of study for which admission is requested shall submit the leaving certificate of such university together with the application for admission.

General university qualification

Evidence of this shall be submitted by means of one of the following documents:

  • Austrian school leaving certificate,
  • Other Austrian certificate concerning the award of the entitlement to pursue a particular course of study at a university or academy (Hochschule)
  • Foreign certificate that is deemed to be equivalent to one of these Austrian certificates by virtue of an agreement under international law or by virtue of official recognition of foreign diploma or by virtue of a decision by the Vice Chancellor of the Austrian university in the individual case,
  • Document concerning the conclusion of an at least three-year course of study at a recognised Austrian or foreign post-secondary educational institution. 
  • Document concerning the conclusion of an at least three-year course of university character.

In any event, evidence of the conclusion of the degree course of studies specified in this Federal Act or in another relevant course of study, a relevant Masters course of study or course of study at a university of applied science or another equivalent course of study at a recognised Austrian or foreign post-secondary educational institution shall be deemed to be evidence of general university qualification for admission to doctoral studies.

Supplementary examinations

If a foreign certificate is not deemed to be equivalent to an Austrian school leaving examination in terms of contents and requirements, the Vice Chancellor shall prescribe the supplementary examinations necessary to achieve equivalence with an Austrian school leaving examination, and such shall be taken before admission.

Special university qualification

In addition to  general university qualification, evidence shall be submitted of compliance with the admission requirements specific to the course of study including the right to direct admission to the course of study (= special university qualification) in the country issuing the document proving general university qualification.

With respect to school leaving certificates issued in Austria, the above shall mean such additional examinations to the school leaving certificate that must be taken before admission to the course of studies by virtue of the University Entitlement Regulation.

If the course of study intended to be pursued in Austria is not available in the country issuing the document, the applicant shall satisfy the admission requirements applicable to a course of study most closely related in terms of subject to the course of study intended to be pursued in Austria.

On the basis of the document submitted as evidence of the general university qualification, the Vice Chancellor shall examine whether the requirements in terms of special university qualification are satisfied in the light of the selected course of study.

Holders of school leaving certificates from a Member State of the European Convention on the Equivalence of Diplomas leading to Admission to Universities shall as a matter of principle only have the same entitlement to study in Austria as is granted to them by virtue of their school leaving certificate in the country of issue.

Pre-studies course

Persons who have to take supplementary examinations before commencement of the regular course of study shall be admitted as irregular students for a limited period of time. They have the possibility of attending the classes available within the framework of the pre-studies course of the Vienna Universities in preparation for the required supplementary examinations. The course fee currently amounts to EUR 370 per semester.

Accordingly, foreign students who apply for admission to a course of studies at the Vienna Technical University shall submit the following documents:

  • Application form
  • Curriculum vitae, history of life in German,
  • Evidence of general university qualification,
  • Evidence of special university qualification,
  • Copy of passport,
  • Two international reply coupons (COUPON-RÉPONSE INTERNATIONAL) for applications from abroad to cover postage.

Deadlines

The application for admission to a regular course of study shall be submitted to the university with all necessary documents by September 1st at the latest for applications for the winter semester and by February 1st at the latest for applications for the summer semester. This deadline cannot be extended.

Exceptions: Citizens of EU/EEA countries.

Documents and authentication

Foreign documents from countries with which Austria has not concluded international agreements or that are not members of the “Hague Convention Abolishing the Requirement of Legalization for Foreign Public Documents” must as a matter of principle bear authentication by the foreign ministry of the country of origin on the original document, following conclusion of the internal authentication process in the country of origin. Following this, there are two possibilities of official legalization, firstly by the competent Austrian representation authority in the country of the origin of the document or secondly by the foreign representation authority in Austria and by the Legalisation Office of the Federal Ministry for Foreign Affairs.
All documents submitted shall be originals or authenticated copies. Authorised German translations shall be attached to documents in foreign languages. Foreign documents must be publicly authenticated in the country of issue and further authenticated by the Austrian representation authority. A translation made aboard must likewise be publicly authenticated and further authenticated by the competent Austrian representation authority. Such further authentication is not necessary for those countries of issue whose public authentications are directly recognised by Austria by virtue of international agreement provisions (e.g. in the specific form of an apostille pursuant to the Hague Legalization Convention).

Knowledge of the german language

Persons whose mother tongue is not German must submit evidence of knowledge of the German language. Evidence shall be provided in particular by a school leaving certificate based on German language instruction.

If such evidence cannot be provided, the Vice Chancellor shall prescribe the requirement of a supplementary examination that shall be taken before admission.

Persons who have applied for admission to a doctoral course of study shall be granted waiver of knowledge of the German language after a hearing by the Chairperson of the Board of Studies for the doctoral course of studies if such knowledge is not required in the light of the organisation of this course of study.

Recognition of examinations

Positive marks obtained in examinations taken by regular students at a recognised Austrian or foreign post-secondary educational institution, a vocational higher school or a higher institute for teacher and educator training or a course of university character shall be recognised by ruling by the Chairperson of the Board of Studies upon application by the regular student, provided that such are equivalent to examinations prescribed in the curriculum.

Applications for recognition, evidenced with the necessary documents, may only be submitted to the Department for Studies and Examinations following admission as regular student.

Tuition fees

Regular students with EU citizenship, citizenship of EEA countries, students from Switzerland and refugees under the provisions of the Geneva Convention don't have to pay tuition fee, if the intended study time was not exceeded for more than two semesters per stage of the degree programme.Students who don't meet these requirements have to pay the tuition fees of € 363,36 per semester (during the additional registration period € 399,70).For more detailed information relating to study fees athe Vienna University of Technology please visit www.tuwien.ac.at/aktuelles/news_detail/article/3614/

 

Waiver of the tuition fee

The tuition fee shall be waived

1. for students for the semester in which they shall submit proof that they shall pursue studies or a practical work period within the framework of transnational EU, national or university mobility programmes;

2. for foreign students whose home country or the university they last attended in such country likewise grants waiver of the tuition fee to students of Austrian nationality;

3. for convention refugees;

4. for holders of an official certificate/victim’s identity paper (Sec. 10 of the Victims Welfare Act, Federal Gazette No. 183/1947).
The Vice Chancellor shall decide on the application for waiver of the tuition fee within the framework of the admission proceedings.

The evidence necessary for waiver of the tuition fee shall be attached to the application.

The Vice Chancellor’s decision shall be entered in the study record.

Students for whom the tuition fee has been waived pursuant to Sec. 11 Para. 1 (1) of the University Fee Act 1972, Federal Gazette No. 76/1972, and who do not pursue a study or practical work period abroad within the framework of transnational EU, state or university mobility programmes, shall pay the tuition fee subsequently. This shall be determined by ruling by the Vice Chancellor.

If students have culpably obtained the waiver of the tuition contribution through incomplete or untrue statements concerning relevant facts or have obtained such by deception, they shall pay twice the tuition fee notwithstanding any liability under criminal law. This shall be determined by ruling of the Vice Chancellor.

An appeal to the Federal Minister for Education, Science and Culture shall be permissible against rulings by the Vice Chancellor.

Refund of the tuition fee

The Federal Minister for Education, Science and Culture shall be entitled by regulation to determine states whose nationals may be refunded the tuition fee in accordance with the focal points set by Austria in measures for assisting and promoting the economic and social development of developing countries and for the assistance of the reform countries of Central and Eastern Europe. Refund shall be effected within the framework of the private economy administration on the basis of applications from the students. The refund shall be effected within four weeks following application for refund. There shall be no legal entitlement to refund.

In addition, a contribution to the Students Union (Hochschülerschaft) shall be paid each semester.

General Considerations

Application for admission to a regular course of study shall be submitted personally during the general admission period and grace period (for the winter semester: middle of September to end of October/end of November, for the summer semester: middle of February to the end of March/end of April).

The admission forms are not sent by post; they must be collected from the Department for Studies and Examinations at the Vienna University of Technology from 4 weeks before commencement of the general admission period.

Classes for the normal course of study begin in each winter semester. Consequently, applicants to a course of studies who have not yet been admitted to university are recommended to commence their university studies in a winter semester.

The Austrian universities have no possibility of awarding grants to foreign students. Applications for grants shall be submitted to the Federal Ministry for Education, Science and Culture via the Austrian representation authorities in the applicant’s home country.

Online registration

The registration has to be done ONLINE. After that you will recieve a sequence number by email. This number is needed at the registration in Vienna. The Außeninstitut (International Office) organizes an orientation session for students who attend a mobilty program (for instance ERASMUS). At this session you will receive a confirmation about your ERASMUS status.

Together with the sequence number, a passport photo, a photo identification and the ERASMUS confirmation you have to go to the Department for Studies and Examinations, 1040 Wien, Karlsplatz 13/1st floor. There you will get the student card.

For the orientation session is needed: a passport photo and the sequence number.

2 to 3 weeks after you have paid the ÖH-fee you will receive a term label which you have to stick into your student card.
